Te Toto Lower Gorge Track

The Te Toto coast has a long and diverse history, from destructive volcanoes to ancient Maori settlement. Geologists can trace the history of the Gorge back an incredible 2.7 million years. At present the track is not fully formed but it is marked from the Te Toto Gorge car park to the bottom of the gorge. A steep descent marks the start of the walk but the terrain flattens out closer to the coast.

There is no track through the open grassy areas but you can wander freely. Keep an eye out for remnants of stonewalls and karaka groves, both providing evidence that the area was used by early Maori settlers. DOC has just recently constructed a viewing platform on the edge of the Gorge, which enables visitors to safely admire the rugged coastal views.
